Install so you can use AI chat

Copy this command, then paste it into PowerShell if you use Scoop:

scoop install opencode

Official docs also list Chocolatey package opencode. Paste this if you use Chocolatey:

choco install opencode

On macOS or Linux, official docs list Homebrew:

Usual Windows zip is opencode-windows-x64.zip. An arm64 zip sits on the same tag. Open the list on GitHub Releases. Live tag observed: V1.18.25, 28 August 2026. Match the file name on the list. File notes sit on Free chatgpt releases. LICENSE sits on Free chatgpt GitHub.

Official docs recommend WSL on Windows if you prefer the script path. Files stay on GitHub. This site does not host the installer. Prefer the GitHub asset over a renamed copy from search.

How to use AI chat tool OpenCode

1. Paste scoop install opencode in PowerShell if you use Scoop, or take opencode-windows-x64.zip from GitHub Releases. Chocolatey package opencode, the Node global package, Homebrew, and the official install script also sit on the project docs.
2. Run OpenCode in a terminal on this machine. You should get a local session, not a website we host.
3. Get a free API key from Groq or Google AI Studio, or install Ollama and pull a model.
4. In the session, run /connect. Search for Groq or the Google provider they list. Paste the key. Keys sit in ~/.local/share/opencode/auth.json.
5. Run /models, pick a model, then type a message. That reply is the AI chat job.

That list is the AI chat path. You are talking in a terminal agent on this machine. You are not filling a website box we host. After the five steps, send one real prompt and read the reply. Checking is part of the job.

What AI chat means here

AI chat on this page means a conversation with a model through OpenCode in your terminal. You install the program. You bring a key or a local model. You type. The program sends the prompt to the provider you connected, then prints the reply in the same window.

People type AI chat when they want to ask a question and get a reply without opening a random website that claims to be a free box. A page that asks you to paste secrets into a form is the wrong shape. The honest shape is a binary or a package you can match, then a terminal on this machine.

The app does not create a model by itself. If you never connected a provider, there is nothing to talk to. Connect first. Then chat.

A terminal, not a website box

Run OpenCode in a terminal you already use: Windows Terminal, PowerShell, or WSL. You should see the local session, not a browser tab that looks like a cloned chat site. We do not host a chat app. We do not host a model.

Stay on a PC you control. A lab image may block unknown programs. Then this AI chat job is closed for that hour. Do not fetch a wrapper to get around a block.

Get a key, then /connect

Open the Groq console, create an account, click Create API Key, and copy the key. Google AI Studio is another free key path. Official OpenCode docs list Groq under Providers. This site does not issue keys.

Install OpenCode, run it, then run /connect. Search for Groq, or the Google provider they list. Paste the key and hit enter. Keys are stored in ~/.local/share/opencode/auth.json. Do not paste that file into chat, mail, or a screenshot.

If you would rather keep the model on this machine, install Ollama, pull a model, and point OpenCode at http://localhost:11434/v1. Official docs show that local provider. No Groq or Google key in that path. This site does not host Ollama.

Pick a model, then type

Run /models and pick one the provider actually lists. Then type a short prompt you can judge: ask it to repeat a word, or to summarize a sentence you just wrote. You want to see a reply in this terminal, not a marketing page.

A first prompt that dumps a whole repo is a noisy first test. Learn the session, the model picker, and one reply. If the reply never comes, the key may be wrong, the provider may be down, or Ollama may not be running. Check those three before you assume the tool is broken.

You can change models mid-session with /models again. Pick the one you meant. Then type the next line. The AI chat job is that loop.

What this AI chat is not

It is not a website we host. It is not a cloned chat homepage. It is not a promise that a cloud vendor will keep a free tier forever. Groq and Google AI Studio set their own limits. We will not invent a quota we did not observe.

Checking a first reply

The job is not finished when the window opens. The job is finished when you connected a provider, picked a model, and got a reply you can read. If it failed, the key is wrong, the model list is empty, or the local server is down.

Count one successful reply before you load a huge prompt. An empty session can mean you skipped /connect. A huge dump can mean you pasted more than you meant. Read before you paste secrets.

Leave API keys out of screenshots. If someone else uses this PC, lock the session when you walk away.

School PCs and uninstall

A lab image may block unknown programs. Then this AI chat job is closed for that hour. Do not fetch a wrapper. A borrowed laptop you return in twenty minutes is a bad place to leave a key in auth.json. Use a PC you control. Connect there.

If you installed with Scoop, Scoop can remove the package. If you took the zip, delete that folder. Closing the terminal is not uninstall. If other people use this PC, tell them you installed OpenCode, or take it off when you are done. Fetch again from GitHub Releases or Scoop, not from a wrapper.

First session

Install. Run. Connect. Pick a model. Send one line. That is a first AI chat. A dump of every file on disk is a terrible first test. You want to learn the session, the picker, and one reply.

If the session stays empty, you may have skipped /connect, or Ollama is not running. Add a real key or start the local server. If the program never appears, you installed the wrong binary. Uninstall a wrapper. Install from Scoop or GitHub Releases.

Updates live on GitHub Releases. Match V1.18.25 until the release page shows another tag. Do not invent a newer number here.
